Hind bint ‘Utbah went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) seeking his advice regarding her husband, Abu Sufyān, who was not giving her provision sufficient for her and her children. She wanted to know if she was permitted to take from his wealth without his knowledge, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed her that it is permissible, provided that she may only take what would be reasonably sufficient without excess or transgression.

• A dinar you spend in the cause of Allah, a dinar you spend on (freeing) a slave, a dinar you give in charity to a needy person, and a dinar you spend on your family; the greatest in reward is the one you spend on your family
• One will be committing a great sin if he withholds sustenance from those whom he should provide for
• The hand which gives is the higher hand. Start with those for whom you are responsible: your mother, your father, your sister, your brother, then the closest in kin and the closest in kin
• The upper hand is better than the lower hand; the upper hand is the giving hand, and the lower hand is the begging hand
